Sculpture in Haryana

Numerous statues of Yakshas and Yakshinis have been found in archaeological excavations from various places of Haryana. Sculpture developed during the reign of the following rulers in the state:

Sculpture During Shung and Kushana Period

  • Statues dating back to 2nd century CE that belong to Kushan period were discovered. These statues are of a mythical character Yakshas and Yakshinis. They are made up of red sandstone.
  • Surya Stamba founded at Ameen in Thanesar is a work of art that has resembles art of Bharhut Sanchi Stupa.
  • Several statues of Yakshas and Yakshinis are also found from Palwal, Bhadas, Hathin and Faridabad which are not in proper form.
  • Statues of God and Goddess are being found from Shung and Kushana period. Statues found from Sanghel (Gurugram), Saundh (Faridabad) and Khekrakot (Rohtak) are made in red sandstone and had an influence of Mathura School of Art.
  • Statues depicting Buddha are found from Gurugram, Mohanbadi, Jhaswa (Rohtak) etc.
